AREA ATTRACTIONS AND FAVORITE PLACES The old Martin County Courthouse has been restored to its original 1937 architectural design and now houses two galleries. Displays include historical photographs of early Martin County works by local artists and other changing exhibitions. Admission by donation. 772.228.2542 Historic Downtown Stuart Step back in time and walk amid the quaint shops, galleries, and restaurants. A self guided walking tour pamphlet is available to familiarize visitors with the early days of this once small fishing village. Points of interest include the River Walk, the Post Office Arcade, the Lyric Theatre, the Stuart Heritage Museaum and more. 772.286.2848 The Lyric Theatre This Mediterranean Rivival style theatre was built in 1925 and is listed on the National Historic Register. It is presently being restored to its original Art Deco decor and being used for concerts, plays and other events. 772.220.1942 On Hutchinson Island... The Elliot Museum The museum houses a collection of American memorabilia dating back to 1865 and features the inventions of Sterling Elliot. Displays include turn of the century shops, local history exhibits, Seminole Indian artifacts, a shell collection and antique and classic automobiles. They also offer a gallery with changing exhibits and a gift shop. 772.225.1961 Gilberts Bar House of Refuge Built in 1875, this is the oldest standing structure in Martin County. This museum, listed as a National Historic Landmark, is the last remaining US Coast Guard Lifesaving Station on Florida's east coast. It houses a collection of marine artifacts and maritime exhibits, some dating back to the 16th Century. 772.225.1875 Florida Oceanographic Society Coastal Science Center Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon, the 40 acre parcel houses the Coastal Science Center's headquarters, library, nature trails and its newly completed visitor center. With its coastal hardwood hammocks and mangrove forest communities, the site provides excellent opportunities for education and research. 772.225.0505 Jonathan Dickinson State Park This 10,000 acre park contains a wide range of plants and wildlife. Visitors can go hiking, camp overnight, take guided tours or paddle a canoe on the Loxahatchee River and visit an old alligator trapper's site. 772.546.2771 |
